PRESS RELEASE – 01.03.19

The Sunshine Coast Turf Club’s Board of Management wish to report that former Chairman and Life Member Mr Don Jackson has decided to retire from the Board after 15 1/2 years service.

Don has played an integral part in the ongoing success of the SCTC and been involved in many changes to racing governance during his time in racing.

In 2007, Don was involved in the negotiations to secure the freehold of Corbould Park from Caloundra City Council and he has been a Director of the Sunshine Coast Racing Unit Trust that has overseen the rapid development of tha racecourse facility including the Cushion Track, Track Lighting and On Course Stables.

“In my personal experience serving on many different Boards, I rate Don as one of the best operators I have worked with and I have no doubt the SCTC would not be in such a strong position without the guidance and expertise of Don Jackson“, commented SCTC Chairman Peter Boyce.

“I wish Don all the best in his retirement and it is pleasing to know that he will still be a regular attendee and supporter of Sunshine Coast Racing in the future“, added Peter Boyce.

At the recent Board meeting it was agreed to appoint Mr Scott Armstrong to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Don.  Scott is the Managing Director of Sunshine Coast Hotels Pty Ltd, Vice President of Queensland Hotels Association, a Board member of Independent Brands Australia Pty Ltd (Queensland) and has been involved in the hospitality industry for 28 years.

“Scott is a long term racing enthusiast and has raced many horses and I am excited to have him joining the Board of the SCTC and his involvement in the future development of the Club“, said Peter Boyce.

The Queen’s Cup

The concept of The (then) King’s Cup races, and the original conditions for it, were decided upon by the Conference of Delegates from Principal Clubs in Australia, and were approved by His Majesty The King in 1927.

The first race of the Series was run on Saturday 23 April 1927 at Flemington by the Victoria Racing Club in honour of the visit of their Royal Highness, the Duke and Duchess of York.

The race, which was won by Spear Maiden, was worth £1,250 to the winner.  The owners also received a gold cup, which was a gift of His Majesty King George V.

With the exception of the war years of 1940-45 inclusive, the Cup has been run ever since, with the assent of the ruling monarch, and has rotated from State to State.

Since 1952, the race has of course been known as The Queen’s Cup.  Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, has again graciously sanctioned the running of The Queen’s Cup in the 2018/19 Racing Season, and has donated a gold cup to the winning owner(s).

Many top class horses have won The Queen’s Cup, including Phar Lap, Rogilla, Macdougal, Book Link, River Seine, Red Handed, Leilani and Natski.

The Queen’s Cup is recognised as a “Group 3” race by the International Cataloguing Standards Committee.

The Group 3 Queen’s Cup conducted Saturday 14th July, is the Queen’s Cup Trophy Quality Handicap over 3200m and carries trophy AU$13,000 and prizemoney AU$150,000.
